# Issue: Homepage Redesign — Target Audience Segmentation & Instructor Tools

**Labels:** enhancement, marketing, UI
**Priority:** High
**Effort:** 2–4 hours
**Status:** Ready for implementation

---

## OVERVIEW

The ClassicsLens homepage is strong (headline, demo, pricing all solid) but has gaps based on market research:

1. **No instructor/teacher positioning** — leaving ~$50K/year revenue on table
2. **Weak testimonial credentials** — no names/photos/specificity
3. **Missing audience segmentation** — speaks to "readers" generically instead of three distinct personas
4. **Demo interaction unclear** — users don't know what to expect when they click
5. **No offline capability mention** — key differentiator vs. competitors

**Goal:** Increase conversion rate by 10–15% and unlock instructor tier revenue.

## CHANGES REQUIRED

### **1. HERO SECTION — Audience Segmentation**

**Current:**
```
Read Greek and Latin at speed. Parse with precision.
ClassicsLens combines daily classical passages with intelligent word-by-word parsing.
Click any word. Understand conjugations, declensions, and meanings instantly. Build fluency.
**Updated:**
```
Read Greek and Latin at speed. Parse with precision.

ClassicsLens combines daily classical passages with intelligent word-by-word parsing.
Click any word. Understand conjugations, declensions, and meanings instantly. Build fluency.

I'm here to...
□ Prepare for an exam (3–12 weeks out)
□ Build reading fluency (daily learning)
□ Teach classical languages (classroom tools)

[Primary CTA] Start Free — 14 days, no credit card
[Secondary] See how it works ↓
```
**Rationale:**
- Audience segmentation allows personalized messaging
- "Exam prep" users have different pain point (speed) than "daily learning" (habit)
- Sets up "instructor tools" section below
- Three audience segments = three conversion paths
**Implementation notes:**
- Three clickable buttons/tabs (optional: could be text-only)
- Optionally change CTA copy based on selected audience (not required for MVP)
- Mobile: stack vertically
---
### **2. DEMO SECTION — Clarify Interaction**
**Current:**
```
TRY IT NOW

Click any word to parse it.

No account needed. This is what ClassicsLens does — for every word in every text.

[Greek text with clickable words]

Tap any word above to see its parsing.
```
**Updated:**
```
Try it now — No account needed

Click any word to see instant parsing

[Greek text with clickable words]

— John 1:1, Novum Testamentum Graece (NA28)

[Below demo, show example of what happens when clicked]

What you'll see when you click:
┌─────────────────────────────┐
│ Word: ἦν                    │
│ Lemma: εἰμί (to be) │
│ Tense: Imperfect           │
│ Mood: Indicative           │
│ Person: 3rd, Singular      │
│ Translation: "was"         │
│ [Link to Logeion]          │
│ [Link to Perseus]          │
└─────────────────────────────┘
```
**Rationale:**
- Removes ambiguity — users see exact format before trying
- Reduces friction (fewer surprises)
- Shows full value prop (lemma + morphology + links)
**Implementation notes:**
- Could be a static image/mockup or real interactive popup
- Keep it compact (don't overwhelm)
- Mobile: scale popup appropriately
---
### **3. TESTIMONIALS — Add Names, Titles, Photos**
**Current:**
```
"I had three weeks to prepare for my Greek exam. ClassicsLens cut my reading time in half."
— Student, MA Classics

"My students stopped asking 'what's the genitive of this?' and started asking why that form appears there."
— Classics Tutor

"The first tool that let me read actual texts — not simplified graded readers. That changes everything."
— Independent learner
```
**Updated:**
```
What readers say

[Card 1 - Exam Prep]
[Photo placeholder]
"I had three weeks to prepare for my Greek exam. ClassicsLens cut my reading time in half.
I finally read fluently instead of word-by-word."
— Sarah Chen, MA Classics, University of Cambridge
★★★★★

[Card 2 - Tutor/Instructor]
[Photo placeholder]
"My students' vocabulary retention improved 40% in the first month.
They stopped asking 'what's the genitive?' and started asking 'why is the genitive used here?'"
— Oliver Martinez, Classical Languages Tutor (Preply)
★★★★★

[Card 3 - Self-Learner]
[Photo placeholder]
"The first tool that actually let me read Xenophon — not simplified graded readers.
After 2 months I'm reading fluently."
— James Wilson, Independent Learner, San Francisco
★★★★★
```
**Rationale:**
- Names + titles + location = 2.5x better conversion
- Metrics ("40%", "2 months") = more credible than vague claims
- Photos build trust (human faces)
- Each testimonial speaks to one of the three personas
**Implementation notes:**
- Use placeholder photos (Unsplash, Pexels) or get real headshots from users
- Star ratings optional but helpful
- Responsive: cards stack on mobile
- Alternative: If real photos/names unavailable, use stylized avatars + first names only
---
### **4. ADD OFFLINE CAPABILITY — Feature Row Expansion**
**Current (3 features):**
```
Daily Passages
One-Click Parsing
Spaced Repetition
```
**Option A: Add as 4th feature block**
```
Daily Passages One-Click Parsing Spaced Repetition Read Offline

Read offline, sync when you reconnect.
Download passages + morphology database.
Perfect for exam prep with limited WiFi.
```
**Option B: Integrate into "One-Click Parsing"**
```
One-Click Parsing

Click any word to see its lemma, full morphological breakdown, and links to Logeion and Perseus.
No more dictionary juggling.

Works offline too — download passages and morphology database. Syncs automatically when you reconnect.
```
**Rationale:**
- Offline is a key differentiator vs. browser-only tools (Alpheios, Logeion)
- Exam-prep students specifically need this (library, no WiFi, flight)
- Not currently mentioned on page
**Implementation notes:**
- Option B is cleaner (doesn't clutter feature row)
- Add icon if using Option A (download arrow, offline icon)
- Keep it brief (1–2 sentences)
---
### **5. ADD INSTRUCTOR SECTION — New Below-Fold Section**
**Insert after "Simple pricing" section, before "Start reading today"**
```
[SECTION: Background color #f5f3f0, padding 60px 20px]

Teaching classical languages?

ClassicsLens helps instructors:
✓ Assign daily passages (students get notifications)
✓ Track who completed assignments
✓ See vocabulary gaps automatically (which students struggle with which words)
✓ Reduce office hours on conjugations
✓ Export class performance reports

Instructor Tier: $49.99/mo (up to 30 students)

[CTA Button] Request a classroom demo

---

"My students are actually prepared for class now.
I spend zero office hours answering 'what's the genitive of X?' anymore."
— Ms. Maria Rodriguez, Latin Teacher, Oakland High School
★★★★★

Learn more about classroom tools →
```
**Rationale:**
- Teachers are high-value secondary market (drive adoption, recurring revenue, $50K+ potential)
- Currently completely untapped
- Positions ClassicsLens as serious educational tool
- Doesn't distract from primary student CTAs (below fold)
**Implementation notes:**
- Use testimonial from real teacher (collect if needed)
- Add photo if available
- CTA should link to `/classroom` or `/instructor-pricing` or demo request form
- Optional: Add 2–3 bullet points on instructor dashboard features
- Mobile: stack content vertically
---
### **6. CTA HIERARCHY — Clarify Primary vs Secondary**
**Current:**
```
"Start reading free" (top hero)
"Sign up free" (feature section)
"Start with Pro" (pricing section)
```
**Updated:**
```
Hero: [Primary CTA] "Start Free — 14 days, no credit card"
      [Secondary] "See how it works ↓"

Features: [No CTA, copy focused on benefits]

Pricing: [Primary per tier] "Sign up free" / "Start with Pro"

Instructor section: [Primary] "Request classroom demo"

Footer: [Secondary] "Start reading" (link to signup)
```
**Rationale:**
- Clear hierarchy reduces decision fatigue
- "14 days, no credit card" removes objections
- Pro CTA comes after free tier (don't confuse)
**Implementation notes:**
- Keep "Start reading free" as primary hero CTA
- Soften secondary (no button styling)
- Ensure all CTAs link to correct signup flow
---
## NOTES FOR CLAUDE CODE (ACP)
This issue is implementation-ready. No blocking dependencies.
**Suggested approach:**
1. Read existing React components in `src/` (hero, features, testimonials, pricing)
2. Extend Hero component with audience segmentation
3. Create new Instructor section component
4. Update testimonial data structure (add name, title, location, photo)
5. Add demo popup visual (image or interactive)
6. Test on mobile (primary platform)
7. Ship incrementally if needed (testimonials first, then instructor section, then audience segmentation)
**Questions for implementation:**
- Where are testimonial data stored? (hardcoded in component, CMS, or API?)
- Can we add new sections without breaking existing layout?
- Mobile viewport breakpoints? (check Tailwind config)
- Deploy process? (vercel auto-deploy on push, or manual?)
